Talk Radio (1988)
The American drama thriller film, Talk Radio (1988), was directed by Oliver Stone. The main character, Barry Champlain, is a Jewish radio host in Dallas, Texas. Known for his sharp sense of humor and bold political opinions, he often talks down to his listeners. Despite this, Champlain’s show is gaining popularity and is set to go nationwide. Before becoming a radio personality, Champlain worked as a salesman under the name Barry Golden. He slowly made a name for himself through guest appearances on the Jeff Fisher show, using different aliases until settling on Champlain. As his fame grows, Champlain’s quick wit and biting humor become the highlight of the show, much to Fisher’s annoyance. Eventually given his own show, Champlain’s ratings skyrocketed to the top of the Arbitron charts. While some callers praise him for his style and content, others seem to despise him.
He receives a substantial number of hostile callers, attacking individuals ranging from gays to drug addicts, rednecks, and African Americans. These include people who take offense to his attitude, radical right-wingers, and hate groups attempting to harass and intimidate him. One caller even makes a bomb threat, resulting in threatening fan mail. As Barry’s rise to fame continues, he also faces the alienation of his wife. Now going through a final audition for national syndication, Barry becomes increasingly isolated and reaches out to his ex-wife Ellen for support. Seeking her input and trusting her the most, he asks her to visit him. Despite their strained relationship, they try to reconnect. During this time, Ellen calls into the radio show using a fake name from the studio in an effort to reach Barry and help him overcome his depression.
