Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) is an American sports comedy film directed by Adam McKay and co-written by Will Ferrell. Born in rural North Carolina, Ricky Bobby’s arrival into the world was a bit unconventional – in the backseat of a speeding car, as his father Reese missed the turnoff for the hospital. After that, Ricky only saw his father once at school when he was 10 years old. It was during this brief encounter that Reese imparted some valuable advice to his son: ‘If you ain’t first, you’re last’. Taking those words to heart, Ricky went on to work on Terry Cheveaux’s pit crew fifteen years later. When Cheveaux needed to take a bathroom break during a race, Ricky stepped in and finished third. Impressed with his skills, team owner Larry Dennit Sr. offered Ricky a permanent seat and he quickly became one of NASCAR’s most successful drivers. It was also during this time that he met Carley, who caught his attention by flashing her breasts after one of his wins.
After convincing Dennit to include his best friend Cal Naughton Jr. on the team, Ricky and Cal’s ‘Shake and Bake’ slingshot maneuver proves to be unbeatable on the track. However, as Ricky’s ego grows, it causes tension with Dennit’s distant son. In response, the son brings in Jean Girard, a talented and openly gay Formula One driver from France. Not only does Girard mock Ricky, but he also outperforms him and becomes the top driver for the team. Striving to defeat Girard, Ricky ends up crashing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and experiencing a possible mental breakdown on the track. This leads to his hospitalization and a decline in his racing abilities due to fear of another crash. As a result, Dennit ultimately decides to let Ricky go from the team. Additionally, Carley leaves Ricky for Cal despite Cal still considering him as a close friend. However, Ricky firmly declares their friendship is over.
