Tangled (2010), a 2010 American animated musical adventure fantasy comedy film, was produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. A single drop of sunlight, descending from the sky, produces a magical flower with healing properties. An elderly woman named Gothel utilizes it to retain her youth. After many centuries, soldiers from the kingdom of Corona take the flower and utilize it to save their queen who is pregnant and ill. The queen gives birth to a daughter named Rapunzel. Gothel sneaks into the castle and discovers that Rapunzel’s hair inherited the magic from the flower, but loses its power when cut. To maintain control of this magical ability, Gothel kidnaps Rapunzel and raises her in a secret tower located in the woods. Every year on Rapunzel’s birthday, the king and queen release sky lanterns in hopes that they will guide her back home.
After 18 long years, it seemed that Rapunzel’s fascination with the annual lights had only grown stronger. As her 18th birthday approached, she bravely asked for permission to leave the tower and explore their mysterious origins. However, Gothel harshly refused, insisting that the outside world was far too dangerous for Rapunzel to venture into. In the midst of this turmoil, notorious thief Flynn Rider made off with Rapunzel’s intended crown from the palace. Despite being pursued by royal guard-horse Maximus and leaving his partners in crime behind, Flynn managed to find refuge in…you guessed it, Rapunzel’s tower. Sensing danger, Rapunzel knocked him out and hid him away in a hastily-emptied closet. But when she tried to present Flynn as proof of her ability to defend herself against danger, Gothel cruelly berated her and reaffirmed that she would never be allowed to leave the tower. Refusing to give up hope, Rapunzel cleverly devised a plan and slyly requested new paint as a gift from Gothel, who was then forced on an unexpected three-day journey away from the tower.
