Taps (1981)
Taps (1981), an American thriller starring George C. Scott, features Cadet Brian Moreland dining privately with General Harlan Bache at Bunker Hill Military Academy. During their meeting, Moreland is promoted to the highest cadet rank of Cadet Major by Bache. The following day, it’s announced that the school will be sold to real estate developers, but will remain open for one more year to allow seniors to graduate and underclassmen to find new schools. Bache and the cadets are hopeful that this decision will save their beloved academy. After commencement, a dance is held at the academy, during which local teenagers harass some cadets and a fight breaks out. When Bache tries to intervene, his service pistol is taken by one of the local boys and accidentally discharges, resulting in the death of one of them.
Despite removing the magazine, there was still a round in the chamber. After Bache’s arrest and subsequent heart attack, the school board makes the decision to shut down the school. When his officers gather to discuss their plan of action, Moreland is unanimously chosen to take control of the campus. As the dean of students and local sheriff arrive at the armory to retrieve the weapons, they discover that they have already been taken. Major Moreland leads a group of armed cadets who refuse to let them enter and demand a meeting with Bache and the board of trustees in order to keep the school running. The dean and sheriff are then escorted off the grounds while armed cadets secure the perimeter.
