Taxi (1978 — 1983)
The American sitcom, Taxi (1978–1983), was originally broadcasted on ABC from September 12, 1978 to May 6, 1982, and then on NBC from September 30, 1982 to June 15, 1983. It explores the daily experiences of a few taxi drivers and their tough dispatcher in New York City. The show follows the employees who work the night shift at the fictional Sunshine Cab Company and mainly takes place in the company’s garage in Manhattan. Alex Reiger is the only driver who sees driving a cab as his career while others consider it a temporary job. Elaine Nardo is a single mother working as an art gallery receptionist while Tony Banta is a struggling boxer. Bobby Wheeler is trying to make it as an actor and John Burns (who leaves after season one) is studying part-time. They all take pity on ‘Reverend Jim’ Ignatowski, an aging former hippie minister who has experienced drug burnout, so they assist him in becoming a cabbie.
The show’s characters include the lovable Latka Gravas, a mechanic with an innocent and wide-eyed demeanor from an unspecified foreign country, and Louie De Palma, the strict and tyrannical dispatcher. Throughout the series, numerous episodes revolve around a character’s pursuit of their dream to advance in life, only to see it ruthlessly snatched away. Meanwhile, the cabbies grapple with their unfulfilling lives and endure Louie’s constant mistreatment and disdain (despite his own past as a cab driver). Additionally, Louie’s assistant Jeff Bennett is initially seldom seen but gains a larger role in later seasons.
