Taxi Driver (1976)
The American neo-noir psychological vigilante film Taxi Driver (1976) follows Travis Bickle, a chronic insomniac and lonely man in New York City. To cope, he takes a job as a night shift taxi driver and frequents adult movie theaters while keeping a diary filled with aphorisms. However, he becomes disillusioned with the city’s crime and urban decay, yearning to rid ‘the scum off the streets’. Along the way, Travis becomes infatuated with Betsy, who works as a campaign volunteer for Senator Charles Palantine’s presidential bid. After visiting her at the campaign office and asking her out for coffee, she agrees and confesses to feeling a special connection with Travis, agreeing to go on another date. During their date, Travis takes Betsy to a porn theater, which repulses her and leads to her departure.
Despite his attempts to make amends, she remains unresponsive. Frustrated, he storms into the campaign office where she works and verbally attacks her before being ordered to leave. Experiencing an existential crisis and witnessing acts of prostitution throughout the city, Travis confides in Wizard, a fellow taxi driver, about his violent thoughts. However, Wizard dismisses them and assures him that everything will be okay. In an effort to release his anger, Travis begins a rigorous physical training regimen. Another taxi driver recommends him to Easy Andy, a black market gun dealer, from whom he purchases four handguns. At home, Travis practices quickly drawing his weapons and modifies one of them for easy concealment and access from his sleeve.
