In the biographical crime thriller film Ted Bundy (2002), written and directed by Matthew Bright with co-writer Stephen Johnston, a law student in Seattle named Ted seems like a friendly guy next door. However, beneath this facade lies a monster. After spying on women from his windows, Ted finds the courage to commit his first murder. He continues his gruesome spree by tricking young women into his car with fake injuries or impersonating a police officer. He then knocks them out, binds them, and takes them to a predetermined location where he rapes and kills them. Using his yellow VW Beetle, he leaves a trail of blood across the United States, while the police remain clueless due to his seemingly upstanding citizen and ambitious student persona.
In 1975, one of Ted’s victims, Tina Gabler, finally escapes his grasp by jumping from his moving car. After a police officer stops him based on her description of the vehicle, Ted is arrested. The contents of his trunk are disturbing – pantyhose masks, a hand saw, a crowbar, knives, ropes, and handcuffs. Even though Tina picks him out in a lineup, Ted vehemently denies knowing her. During a prison visit with his girlfriend Lee in Colorado, Ted confesses to her that he is facing charges for multiple murders but claims there is no evidence to convict him. However, it becomes clear to Lee that Ted is indeed guilty and she ends their relationship.
