Tenet (2020), a science fiction action thriller film, was both written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film was produced by Nolan himself and his wife Emma Thomas. During a staged terrorist siege at an Opera House in Kyiv, the Protagonist leads a covert CIA extraction on ‘the 14th’ date. While facing KORD forces, he is rescued by a mysterious individual wearing a red trinket. Our protagonist successfully secures an artifact but his team is captured and subjected to torture. In a moment of desperation, he takes what he believes to be a suicide pill but ultimately realizes it was fake; the ultimate test that only he passed. Following this harrowing experience, he is approached by ‘Tenet’, a highly secretive organization who informs him about objects with ‘inverted’ entropy that move backward through time. Together with his handler Neil, they follow these inverted objects to arms dealer Priya Singh in Mumbai. It is revealed that Priya is also a member of Tenet and that Russian oligarch Andrei Sator has been communicating with the future.
Kat Barton, Sator’s estranged wife and an art appraiser, was responsible for authenticating a forged Goya by her friend Arepo. However, Sator purchased the painting in order to blackmail her. In an attempt to retrieve the Goya, the Protagonist and Neil venture to Oslo Airport where it is being held at Sator’s freeport facility. Their mission is disrupted by two masked individuals who emerge from opposite sides of a machine. Later on in Mumbai, Priya reveals that the device used by the masked men was called a ‘turnstile’, which has the ability to invert entropy. Unbeknownst to them, the two men were actually one person traveling in opposing directions through time. It is then revealed that Sator had betrayed his CIA team but KORD managed to obtain the artifact – plutonium-241. Despite their previous failed attempt at stealing the Goya, Kat introduces the Protagonist to Sator in Italy. Initially planning to kill him, Sator changes his mind when he mentions Kyiv.
