Tequila Sunrise (1988)
Tequila Sunrise (1988) is a romantic crime flick penned and helmed by Robert Towne. Former drug dealer Dale ‘Mac’ McKussic is determined to leave his shady past behind. His longtime friend, Detective Lieutenant Nick Frescia from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, must uphold the law and arrest Mac if he resumes his illegal activities, as believed by DEA Agent Hal Maguire. Meanwhile, Mac finds himself attracted to Jo Ann Vallenari, a restaurant owner. As Nick delves deeper into Mac’s affairs, specifically his ties to Mexican drug lord Carlos, who is suspected of coming into town by DEA agents and Mexican federal police captain Escalante, he meets Jo Ann. Despite having a legitimate business and being a single father trying to turn over a new leaf, Mac cannot seem to avoid getting entangled in one last job pushed on him by Carlos, who he feels indebted to for past favors.
After falling for Nick’s charms, a love affair is sparked between him and Jo Ann. In a meeting at her restaurant with Maguire and Escalante to discuss Mac and Carlos, Escalante offers Nick a pistol as a sign of goodwill. However, Jo Ann accuses Nick of using her to gather information on Mac, who frequents her eatery and previously hired her to cater his son’s birthday celebration. Nick does admit that his initial intentions were related to investigating Mac, but he has since genuinely fallen for Jo Ann. Despite this confession, Jo Ann ends their relationship upon discovering Nick attempting to eavesdrop on a private phone call. Meanwhile, Maguire and his associates devise a plan to ensnare Mac and the elusive Carlos, whose identity remains unknown to everyone except Mac.
