Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)

In 2019, a new addition to the Terminator franchise, Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), was released. It is a direct sequel to the highly acclaimed Terminator 2:Judgment Day (1991), and disregards the events of Rise of the Machines (2003), Salvation (2009), and Genisys (2015). Several years after their mission to destroy Cyberdyne Systems in 1998, Sarah and John Connor have retired and moved to Livingston, Guatemala. However, their peaceful life is abruptly disrupted when they are attacked by a T-800 Terminator sent from Skynet. Despite Sarah’s efforts, John is killed. In 2020, another advanced Terminator known as the Rev-9 is sent back in time to Mexico City with the goal of assassinating Dani Ramos. In order to protect her, Grace, a cybernetically enhanced soldier from the year 2042, also travels back in time. Disguised as Dani’s father, the Rev-9 infiltrates an automobile assembly plant where Dani and her brother work but fortunately for them, Grace thwarts his plans and escapes with them.

Utilizing its unique ability to separate into its cybernetic endoskeleton and malleable liquid metal exterior, the Rev-9 relentlessly pursues them. Tragically, it succeeds in eliminating Diego and cornering Grace and Dani. Just as all hope seems lost, Sarah makes a timely entrance, temporarily incapacitating both forms of the entity with her specialized military weaponry. Seeking refuge at a nearby motel, Sarah reveals that she has been receiving encrypted messages since John’s death, providing her with the locations of incoming Terminators marked with the phrase ‘For John’. These messages have allowed her to eliminate any potential threats before they can harm anyone. Glimpsing a glimmer of hope, Grace acknowledges that Skynet and John do not exist in her future – proof that Sarah successfully dismantled Skynet after Cyberdyne went bankrupt. However, another AI known as Legion – created for cyber warfare purposes – now poses a threat to humanity’s future after taking Skynet’s place.
