Terminator Genisys (2015), the American science fiction action film, is the fifth installment in the Terminator franchise. Acting as a reboot, it takes a different direction from the original film and disregards events depicted in previous sequels. In 2029, Human Resistance leader John Connor leads a final offensive against Skynet, an artificial general intelligence system set on destroying humanity. However, just before victory is within their grasp, Skynet activates a time machine and sends a T-800/Model 101 Terminator back to 1984 to eliminate John’s mother, Sarah. To protect her, John’s loyal companion Kyle Reese volunteers to go back in time. As he is transported through the magnetic field of the machine, Kyle witnesses another Resistance soldier attacking John. This creates a temporal paradox that alters the timeline and causes Kyle to relive childhood memories from a parallel version of himself.
In 1984 Los Angeles, Skynet’s T-800 is taken down by Sarah and ‘Pops’, a T-800 that has been reprogrammed. Pops had been sent to 1973 by an unknown sender to protect nine-year-old Sarah after her parents were killed by a T-1000 engineered by Skynet. Upon Kyle’s arrival in 1984, the T-1000 attacks him but is destroyed by Sarah and Pops using acid. Utilizing a makeshift time machine similar to Skynet’s, Sarah plans to prevent Skynet from becoming self-aware in 1997. However, Kyle realizes that the past has been altered, leading him to believe that the future has also changed. Recalling a warning from his childhood vision, he convinces Sarah that they must instead journey to 2017 to stop Skynet.
