Testament (1983), a drama film, is based on a three-page story titled The Last Testament by Carol Amen and directed by Lynne Littman. Set in the fictional suburb of Hamelin, California, the film follows the Wetherly family: husband Tom, wife Carol, and their children Brad, Mary Liz, and Scottie. Tom works in San Francisco as the main provider for the family. One afternoon, while Carol is at home, she receives an answering machine message from Tom saying he will be back for dinner soon. At the same time, Scottie is watching Sesame Street on TV when suddenly it is interrupted by white noise. The screen then displays a San Francisco news anchor reporting that there have been ‘nuclear devices’ detonated along the East Coast and that they have lost their New York signal. Before the anchorman can finish his report, an Emergency Broadcast System tone takes over.

As an announcer’s voice announces a White House interruption, a blinding flash of nuclear detonation is seen through the window and the broadcast abruptly ends. The family huddles on the floor in fright while the town’s air-raid sirens sound off. Shortly after, their neighbors are spotted running around outside, appearing disoriented and afraid. In an attempt to stay composed, the family worries about Tom’s safety while Hamelin appears to have escaped relatively unharmed. As concerned residents gather at the home of elderly ham radio operator Henry Abhart, he informs them that he has made contact with survivors in rural areas but sadly reveals that all major U.S. cities and the entire Bay Area are silent on the radio. A local boy named Larry, who tragically lost his parents in the attack, seeks refuge with the Wetherleys but ultimately succumbs to radiation poisoning.
