That Thing You Do! (1996) is an American musical comedy-drama film written and directed by Tom Hanks, making his debut as a feature writer and director. Set in 1964, the story follows Guy Patterson, a budding jazz drummer from Erie, Pennsylvania who works at his family’s appliance store. One day, his friends Jimmy and Lenny ask him to fill in for their regular drummer Chad, who broke his arm, at a talent show where they plan to perform a song Jimmy wrote. The trio practices the slow-tempo ballad ‘That Thing You Do!’ in Jimmy’s garage. In need of a band name, Jimmy’s girlfriend Faye suggests ‘The Oneders’, cleverly referencing the Beatles. When they take the stage at the talent show, Guy plays the song at a faster pace than what they rehearsed in the garage.
While Jimmy initially protests, he and Lenny quickly adapt to Guy’s style and they end up winning the competition against all odds – much to Jimmy’s annoyance. The band secures a paying gig at Villapiano’s, a nearby pizza parlor. Afterward, they receive a request for a record and decide to record the song with the help of Guy’s Uncle Bob. When local talent promoter Phil Horace notices their potential, he promises to get them on the radio within ten days. Despite initial reluctance, Lenny convinces the band to sign with him. Phil fulfills his promise by getting their song played on Pennsylvania radio and booking them for a rock & roll showcase concert in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties and their lack of stage experience, they are met with boos from the crowd.
