The British thriller film, The 39 Steps (1959), was directed by Ralph Thomas and stars Kenneth More and Taina Elg. After witnessing a nanny almost being killed in a failed hit-and-run attempt, Richard Hannay decides to help her. He is taken aback when he realizes there is no baby in the pram. Intrigued, Hannay meets her at the Palace Music Hall where they watch the performance of Mr Memory. Afterwards, they go back to Hannay’s flat where she confides in him that she works for British Intelligence and is on a mission against a group known as ‘The Thirty-Nine Steps’. The leader of this group has a missing finger tip, but nothing else is known about him. ‘The Thirty-Nine Steps’ possess top-secret plans for ‘Boomerang’, a British ballistic missile project that could shift the balance of power in Europe.

She informs Hannay that she must urgently depart for Scotland, but before she can leave, she is assassinated by two hitmen while Hannay is away from the room. Worried about facing murder charges, Hannay makes the choice to carry out her task without delay. He cleverly slips past his would-be assailants by dressing up as a milkman and boarding an LNER Class A4 train headed for Scotland from King’s Cross station. En route, he unexpectedly crosses paths with Miss Fisher, a netball instructor at an all-girls boarding school. In order to elude police officers who come onboard in Edinburgh, Hannay fabricates a story about them being lovers. Unfortunately, Miss Fisher unintentionally reveals the truth and Hannay must make a daring escape by leaping off the motionless train on the Forth Bridge.
