The Abyss (1989) is an American science fiction film written and directed by James Cameron. In January 1994, the U.S. Ohio-class submarine USS Montana encounters an unidentified submerged object and sinks near the Cayman Trough. As Soviet ships and a hurricane approach, the U.S. government dispatches a SEAL team to Deep Core, a privately owned experimental underwater drilling platform near the Cayman Trough, to use as their base. The team is joined by Dr. Lindsey Brigman, designer of the platform and estranged wife of current foreman Virgil ‘Bud’ Brigman. While investigating Montana, a power outage in their submersibles causes Lindsey to see an unfamiliar light circling the vessel, which she later refers to as ‘non-terrestrial intelligence’ or ‘NTI’.
Ordered to expedite the mission, Lt. Hiram Coffey, SEAL team leader, takes one of the mini-subs without Deep Core’s approval to retrieve a Trident missile warhead from Montana. The storm hits above, catching the crew off guard and leaving them unable to detach from their surface support ship in time. As a result, the cable crane is ripped from the ship and plunges into the trench, pulling Deep Core towards the edge before coming to a halt. This causes significant damage to the rig and unfortunately results in casualties among the crew. Stranded and facing harsh weather conditions, they must wait out the storm until they can re-establish communication and be rescued. Amidst their struggle with the cold, they are surprised when they discover that the NTIs have created an animated column of water to inspect the rig – almost like an alien version of a remotely operated vehicle.
