The Accountant (2016)
Directed by Gavin O’Connor, The Accountant (2016) is an American action thriller film written by Bill Dubuque. The protagonist, who goes by the name ‘Christian Wolff’, is on the autism spectrum. While his mother wants to send him to Harbor Neuroscience for treatment, his father disagrees and takes it upon himself to train Christian and his brother Braxton in various martial arts. This training also includes encouraging Christian to face stimuli that usually trigger him, rather than avoiding them. As things stand, Christian runs a small accounting office in Plainfield, Illinois, which serves as a cover for his money laundering operation. His criminal clients contact him through an unnamed woman who also handles the organization of his business. Christian gets hired by Living Robotics to audit their firm after its CEO Lamar Blackburn and his sister Rita discover some irregularities in their accounting records.
To assist with the audit, they assign their in-house accountant Dana Cummings when she uncovers the issue. As the Treasury Director, Ray King sits down with a data analyst by the name of Marybeth Medina. Medina, who had a juvenile criminal record, had failed to mention it on her job application. King reminds her of the potential consequences if her past is exposed and gives her the responsibility of uncovering Wolff’s true identity before his upcoming retirement. With the help of King’s tip and access to tax records, Medina is able to track down Wolff’s office. In a single evening, Wolff examines over ten years’ worth of financial documents for the company and discovers that $61 million has been stolen.
