The Adam Project (2022), an American science-fiction action comedy produced by Skydance Media, Maximum Effort, and 21 Laps Entertainment for Netflix, takes place in a dystopian 2050. Fighter pilot Adam Reed steals his time jet to embark on a rescue mission to 2018 but ends up crash-landing in 2022 instead. Here, he encounters his 12-year-old self who is still grieving the loss of their father Louis in a car accident. Reluctantly seeking assistance from his younger counterpart, Adam explains that he is searching for his wife Laura who was believed to have died during a mission in 2018.
Adam is being pursued by Maya Sorian, the tyrant ruling the dystopian world, and her accomplice Christos in an attempt to capture him and bring him back to 2050. However, the Adams are saved by Laura who discloses that she narrowly escaped a murder plot against her and ended up stranded in the present timeline. Through Laura’s revelations, it becomes clear that Sorian has manipulated the past by using time travel to gain control of the future. Realizing the consequences of this manipulation, Laura implores Adam to journey back to 2018 and dismantle time travel – a technology developed by his father Louis – in order to restore balance and safeguard the future. In a final showdown, Sorian attacks but Laura selflessly sacrifices herself so that both Adams can flee.
