The Adjustment Bureau (2011) is a captivating American sci-fi romantic thriller, marking George Nolfi’s directorial debut. In 2006, Brooklyn congressman David Norris misses out on a seat in the US Senate. As he rehearses his concession speech, he crosses paths with Elise Sellas and shares a passionate kiss. Unfortunately, they are separated before he can learn her name. Despite this, David finds himself inspired by their encounter and delivers an unusually honest speech, making him a top contender for the next election. A month later, Harry Mitchell receives an assignment from Richardson at Madison Square Park near David’s home. The task involves spilling coffee on David’s shirt by 7:05 a.m., causing him to return home to change.
However, Harry falls asleep, allowing David to catch his intended bus for work and reunite with Elise once again. This time, he manages to obtain her name and phone number before she exits the bus. David arrives at work early and discovers his coworkers being examined by unfamiliar men, including Richardson. He tries to escape, but is overpowered and taken to a warehouse. After some discussion, Richardson discloses the existence of the ‘Adjustment Bureau’ – an organization responsible for enforcing ‘the Plan’ created by ‘the Chairman’ to ensure people’s lives go according to plan. He informs David that he was not supposed to see Elise again, so he destroys the card with her phone number and allows David to leave.
