Set in 1938 Brussels, Belgium, it follows young journalist Tintin and his trusty dog Snowy as they explore an outdoor market. Despite being approached by Interpol officer Barnaby and ship collector Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine, both eager to purchase a miniature model of a ship called the Unicorn, Tintin manages to secure the item for himself. But upon returning home with the model, it is accidentally broken during a chase between Snowy and a cat. As Tintin searches for the missing pieces, he discovers a parchment scroll underneath a piece of furniture. Meanwhile, bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson are hot on the trail of pickpocket Aristides Silk.
After his trip to Maritime Library to uncover the Unicorn’s history, Tintin finds the model has been stolen upon his return. He suspects Sakharine and goes to Marlinspike Hall, where he accuses him of the theft. However, he notices that Sakharine’s model is intact and realizes there are two identical ones. Upon returning home, Tintin discovers his apartment has been ransacked. Snowy shows him a scroll, but their discussion is cut short by Barnaby’s arrival. Barnaby is then killed in an attempt to retrieve the Unicorn. Tintin puts the scroll in his wallet, but it gets pickpocketed by Silk the next morning. Later on, Tintin is abducted and imprisoned by Sakharine’s accomplices on board the SS Karaboudjan. He learns that Sakharine had formed an alliance with the ship’s crew and staged a mutiny to gain control.
