The Age of Innocence (1993), an American historical romantic drama film directed by Martin Scorsese, is an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s 1920 novel. Set in 1870s New York City, it follows the story of gentleman lawyer Newland Archer, who is engaged to the respectable young May Welland. May’s cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, has returned to the city after a disastrous marriage to a dissolute Polish Count. Though initially ostracized and subjected to vicious rumors, the countess is eventually embraced by New York’s elite families thanks to May’s family’s support. Despite being snubbed at a social party organized by her relatives, she makes a comeback with the help of Archer at an event hosted by wealthy financier Julius Beaufort.
Known for his risky affairs and dissipated habits, Beaufort introduces her to other established businessmen. As he openly flirts with the countess in public and private, Archer finds himself increasingly drawn to her unconventional views on New York society. However, as he announces his engagement to May, he becomes disenchanted with her innocence, lack of personal opinion, and sense of self. Despite his growing affection for the countess, Archer feels obligated to help persuade her to remain married when she expresses a desire for divorce. When he realizes his true feelings for her, Archer hastily leaves the next day to join May and her family vacationing in St. Augustine, Florida.
