The American action thriller film, The American (2010), directed by Anton Corbijn, follows the story of Jack and his lover, Ingrid, as they spend some time in Sweden. While taking a walk in the wilderness near their cabin, Jack notices a trail of footprints in the snow and quickly pulls Ingrid towards shelter. Gunshots from a sniper are heard in the distance. Ready to protect them both, Jack draws his own gun and takes down the sniper before turning his attention to another armed man. After his swift actions, Jack flees to Rome where he contacts a man named Pavel for help. However, Pavel insists that it is not safe for Jack to stay in Rome and arranges for him to go to Castelvecchio, a small town in the mountains of Abruzzo. Feeling uneasy about this arrangement, Jack decides to dispose of the cell phone that Pavel gave him and heads to nearby Castel del Monte instead.
There, he assumes a new identity under the name Edward. During his stay in Abruzzo, Jack reaches out to Pavel for work. He then meets Mathilde, who requests a custom sniper rifle. Father Benedetto, a priest from the area, takes notice of Jack and befriends him. As Jack frequents a local prostitute named Clara, they begin a romantic relationship. However, Jack becomes suspicious of being followed by an unknown man. Despite this, he meets with Mathilde at a secluded spot near the river to test the rifle she commissioned. She expresses her satisfaction with the work but asks for some final touch-ups and specific ammunition before finalizing their deal.
