The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019)
The American comedy-drama film, The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019), directed by Simon Curtis and written by Mark Bomback, is based on the 2008 novel by Garth Stein. In Seattle, a dying Golden Retriever named Enzo (after Enzo Ferrari) is eagerly waiting for his master and best friend, Denny to return home. As soon as Denny arrives, he notices that Enzo is unable to move and gently picks him up, assuring him that he will always be there for him. It triggers a memory for Enzo of a documentary he watched about belief in Mongolia where dogs are said to return as humans after death. Despite knowing that his memories will fade away, Enzo promises to find Denny again. He then proceeds to narrate his life story. Years ago, Denny purchases a puppy after racing at Yakima speedway in Washington and names him Enzo. Their bond is instant and Denny spends his time teaching auto racing, taking care of Enzo while also pursuing a career as a race driver.
A year passes and Denny and Eve unexpectedly meet at the supermarket. They strike up conversations and she reveals her occupation as an English as a second language teacher. Enzo, in an attempt to end their interaction, fails when Denny invites Eve to a concert his friends will be performing at. As time goes by, they begin dating. Eve shows up to more of Denny’s races, despite not being knowledgeable about them. By springtime, it becomes clear to Enzo that she is here to stay. Denny never tires of making Eve happy and their relationship flourishes quickly. Enzo starts feeling envious of Eve. One day, while alone with Enzo, she confesses her love for Denny. Enzo is unsurprised and feels powerless to do anything about it.
