The Asphalt Jungle (1950)
The film noir The Asphalt Jungle (1950), directed and co-written by John Huston, follows the story of criminal mastermind Erwin ‘Doc’ Riedenschneider. Upon his release from a seven-year prison sentence, Doc seeks out the help of bookie Cobby in an unknown city located near a Midwestern river. In need of $50,000 to complete a major jewel theft, Doc requests the assistance of three individuals: a safecracker, a driver, and a hooligan. With Cobby’s connections, he sets up a meeting with high-class lawyer and fixer Alonzo Emmerich. During the meeting, Doc mentions that the stolen jewels could potentially yield half a million dollars or more. Emmerich agrees to provide the funds and find someone to sell the jewels to.
However, upon returning home and finding his young girlfriend Angela asleep on the couch, Emmerich confesses his financial struggles to private detective Bob Brannom. Despite Brannom’s attempts to collect debts owed to Emmerich in order to fund the jewel heist, they come up empty-handed. Doc enlists Louie Ciavelli as his ‘box man’ and Gus Minissi, a hunchbacked diner owner, as the getaway driver. To complete the team, he hires tough Dix Handley, a gambling-strapped Kentucky native known to Gus. Doll Conovan, who is in love with Dix, learns of his dream to reclaim his family’s horse farm after a difficult year marked by his father’s passing and the injury of a prized colt.
