The political thriller film, The French Conspiracy (1972), directed by Yves Boisset, follows the story of Colonel Kassar, an African dictator backed by the CIA. In a deal with the French secret service, he plans to target Sadiel, a politician from his homeland currently in exile in Geneva. Sadiel is a left-wing idealist who dreams of returning and leading a democratic opposition against Kassar’s oppressive regime. François Darien, a militant French journalist known for his involvement in radical causes, becomes the focus of French intelligence. It is suggested that Darien supported the FLN during the Algerian War and was arrested for killing a police officer before becoming an informant for the police. Lawyer Lempereur, working with French intelligence, discovers Darien’s past connection to Sadiel.

The government then blackmails Darien into assisting them, though he believes his only role is to help facilitate Sadiel’s journey from Geneva to Paris for a television appearance. While Darien is aware of the program’s deceptive nature, Lempereur attempts to persuade him that it serves as a facade for concealed discussions between Sadiel and Kassar. Despite Sadiel’s acceptance to travel to Paris, he is seized by deceitful law enforcement before he can rendezvous with Darien and Michael Howard, an American journalist collaborating on the initiative. Darien tracks Sadiel to a gangster’s residence where he witnesses his mentor’s betrayal and comprehends that he will be eliminated by French intelligence in order to conceal the true purpose of the operation.
