The American epic revisionist Western film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), is a retelling of the events leading up to the titular killing. Written and directed by Andrew Dominik and based on Ron Hansen’s novel of the same name, it portrays the relationship between Jesse James and Robert Ford. In 1881, a starstruck young man named Robert ‘Bob’ Ford seeks out Jesse James while the James Gang plans a train robbery in Blue Cut, Missouri. Despite his brother Charley being a member of the gang, Bob’s attempts to join are unsuccessful. The robbery is not as successful as hoped and Frank James leaves while Jesse returns home to Kansas City with Bob and other members of the gang. After sending away some members, Jesse insists that Bob stay back to help move furniture for their new home in St. Joseph, Missouri.

As they spend more time together, Bob becomes increasingly admiring of Jesse before eventually being sent away himself. After arriving at his widowed sister Martha Bolton’s farmhouse, Bob is reunited with his brothers Charley, Hite, and Liddil. It is revealed by Liddil that he and another member of the James gang, Jim Cummins, are working together to capture Jesse for a considerable reward. Meanwhile, Jesse pays a visit to Ed Miller, a fellow gang member who inadvertently reveals details about Cummins’ plan. In response to this betrayal, Jesse kills Miller before leaving with Liddil to confront Cummins. After failing to locate him, Jesse brutally assaults Albert Ford, a young cousin who had welcomed him in earlier. Upon hearing of this incident, Hite finds Liddil at Bolton’s and holds him at gunpoint.
