The Aviator (2004)

The Aviator (2004), a biographical drama directed by Martin Scorsese and written by John Logan, tells the story of young Howard Hughes. In 1913, his mother teaches him to spell ‘quarantine’ while giving him a bath in Houston, warning about a cholera outbreak. Fourteen years later, he begins directing Hell’s Angels and hires Noah Dietrich to manage his business affairs. However, after seeing the success of The Jazz Singer, Hughes becomes determined to make his film as realistic as possible and converts it to a talking movie. While the film is well-received, Hughes is still unsatisfied and orders it to be recut after the premiere. During this time, he also develops a romantic relationship with actress Katharine Hepburn who provides support for his worsening OCD and germaphobia.
In 1935, Hughes sets a new speed record while test flying the H-1 Racer. Although he has to make an emergency landing in a beet field due to running out of fuel, three years later he breaks the world record by completing a four-day flight around the world. Afterwards, he acquires majority ownership of Transcontinental & Western Air (TWA). However, his company rival Juan Trippe, along with Senator Ralph Owen Brewster, attempts to give Pan Am exclusive rights to international air travel through the Community Airline Bill. Meanwhile, Hepburn becomes weary of Hughes’ idiosyncrasies and work ethic, ultimately leaving him for Spencer Tracy. Shortly after, Hughes becomes involved with 15-year-old Faith Domergue and later actress Ava Gardner.
