The Bad Guys (2022)
The Bad Guys (2022) is an American animated heist comedy film loosely based on the children’s book series by Aaron Blabey. It follows the story of Mr. Wolf, a pickpocket and leader of The Bad Guys, a gang of notorious animal criminals in Greater Los Angeles where humans and anthropomorphic animals coexist. Due to their reputation, they are able to successfully pull off bold thefts and evade capture by the authorities. However, after being insulted by Governor Diane Foxington on live TV, Wolf hatches a plan with his gang to steal the Golden Dolphin award from philanthropist Professor Marmalade during his inauguration gala. During the heist, Wolf unwittingly helps an elderly woman and receives praise for his good deed, causing him to question his actions. As their escape attempt fails and they are arrested, Wolf sees this as an opportunity to reform with the help of Marmalade and Foxington’s approval. But little do they know, Wolf has plans to steal the award again under the guise of reformation.
After inviting the gang to his home, Marmalade struggles with their inability to adapt to good behavior. When their attempt at a ‘heist for good’ goes awry due to Mr. Snake’s actions, Foxington initially calls off the experiment. However, Wolf later confides in her about his struggles with being hated for his species, leading her to reconsider and offer him hope. This prompts Wolf to reflect on his actions and ultimately rescue a cat from a tree, which is captured by Marmalade and shared publicly, changing the gang’s public perception. But this newfound success causes Snake to worry about losing his friend. During their next heist at a gala event, Wolf has a change of heart and cannot go through with the plan. Suddenly, a meteorite on display is stolen, resulting in the gang being wrongly accused and arrested. It is then revealed by Marmalade that he had orchestrated the theft all along in order for the gang to bear the blame (as he was actually the old woman that Wolf had previously helped).
