Ed emerges and catches the man, scolding Lefty for his error. Despite Lefty’s objections to the unlawful nature of their actions, Ed chooses hanging as their means of justice. Upon returning to his ranch with his wife Laura, Ed announces that they will be moving to Washington as he was elected as a Senator. While she has reservations about leaving Lefty in charge, Ed remains confident in his loyalty. The following day, a ranch hand informs both Ed and Lefty that three horses have been stolen. They immediately ride off to investigate.
When Ed and Lefty reach their destination, Ed attempts to pass on his rifle to his friend. However, before he can do so, an unidentified sniper shoots him in the head. She disregards Lefty’s pledge to avenge Ed’s death. As he begins his search, Lefty buries the rifle and sets out on his journey. Meanwhile, Governor James Bierce and Marshal Tom Harrah arrive to offer comfort to Laura. The three of them used to ride together with Ed and Lefty. Upon learning that Lefty has set off in pursuit of the perpetrator, Tom decides to find him before he gets himself into any trouble. Along the way, Lefty encounters Jeremiah Perkins, a young man who starts off as an adversary but eventually earns his trust when he learns more about him.
