The thriller film, The Bar (2017), was directed, produced, and co-written by Álex de la Iglesia. In Madrid, a cafe is the scene of a deadly shooting where two random individuals are killed by an unknown sniper upon leaving the establishment. As authorities evacuate the streets and those inside the bar come to realize one of them may be responsible, it becomes apparent that there is a government operation at play. However, they are disguised as a fire cover-up. Suspicion and tension rise among the remaining patrons as they turn against each other. Suddenly, a man emerges from the bathroom in critical condition. Despite efforts to comfort him, he utters his last words: ‘Don’t touch me!’ before passing away. It is then revealed that the group is actually quarantined due to this man’s illness.
Recognizing his warning, shop owner Amparo keeps five people who had physical contact with him—Elena, Nacho, Trini, Sátur, and Israel—at bay, believing them to be infected. Andrés and Sergio join Amparo, as well as two others who have not had any physical contact with the man, in forcing the remaining five individuals into the cellar at gunpoint. While gathered in the small and dark cellar, they engage in casual conversation until Trini’s claustrophobia causes her to panic and flee up the stairs. Unfortunately, she slips and falls onto a crate of bottles, shattering them. Nacho notices that instead of spilling on the floor, the liquid from the broken bottles has seeped somewhere below. They soon discover a grate leading to the sewer hidden beneath several pieces of cardboard. Despite its small opening, they are able to remove the grate.
