The Basketball Diaries (1995) is an American biographical crime drama that delves into the detrimental effects of drug addiction on everyday individuals. The film follows high school basketball player Jim Carroll, who struggles with substance abuse and often causes trouble alongside his friends Pedro, Mickey, and Neutron in the bustling city of New York. Along with basketball, Jim also possesses a passion for writing and uses his journal to pour out his innermost thoughts and poetry. Jim’s dear friend Bobby is suffering from leukemia and Jim often visits him at the hospital.
Sadly, after a short trip to a strip show that ends abruptly due to an annoyed Bobby, he eventually passes away. Jim and his group of friends attend his funeral several days later. Feeling depressed over the loss of Bobby, Jim turns to heroin use. During basketball practice, Coach Swifty catches Jim in the bathroom taking a break to get high. In a fit of anger, Jim pushes Swifty into a wall. As time goes on and Jim’s frustrations with school and life increase, he begins to have thoughts of harming his fellow classmates. On the following day before a big game, Pedro, Mickey and Jim take pills from Pedro’s hat in hopes of giving them an energy boost. However, Neutron declines the pills and confronts Jim about his growing addiction.
