The Beach (2000) is an adventure drama film from the year 2000, directed by Danny Boyle and based on Alex Garland’s novel of the same name. The protagonist, Richard, is a young American backpacker who embarks on a journey in Bangkok, where he stays at a dull hotel on Khao San Road. It is here that he meets Françoise and Étienne, a French couple. As fate would have it, he also encounters Daffy, who reveals the existence of a pristine island in the Gulf of Thailand with an exquisite hidden beach. Daffy had previously settled there in secrecy but faced challenges and eventually left. After Daffy’s tragic death by suicide, he leaves Richard with a map to the island. Determined to explore this unknown paradise, Richard persuades Françoise and Étienne to join him as they travel to Ko Samui. Along the way, Richard meets two American surfers who have heard about the island and shares a copy of his map with them.

As they journey to the island, Richard becomes smitten with Françoise. After swimming from a nearby island, they come across an armed Thai farmers guarding a cannabis plantation. Sneaking past, they reach the other side of the island and meet Keaty, who leads them to a group of fellow travelers living there in secrecy. Sal, the English leader of the community, explains that they are able to stay thanks to an agreement with the farmers, as long as they remain discreet and don’t let any more outsiders onto the island. To maintain their cover, Richard lies about showing their map to anyone else. With time, the trio becomes fully embraced by the community. One evening, Françoise takes Richard to the beach and confesses her feelings for him, leading them to begin a romantic affair.
