The Bear (1988), a French adventure family film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and released by TriStar Pictures, is adapted from the novel The Grizzly King (1916) by American author James Oliver Curwood. Set in the mountainous wilds of British Columbia in 1885, it tells the story of a mother grizzly bear and her cub who are searching for honey when tragedy strikes. The mother is crushed to death by a rockslide, leaving the cub to fend for himself. Meanwhile, a male Kodiak bear also roams the mountains in search of food and a mate, unknowingly being stalked by two trophy hunters named Tom and Bill. In their pursuit, Tom shoots at the Kodiak but only manages to graze its shoulder before it escapes. Later on, they discover that two of their horses have gone missing amidst crashing noises in the woods.

After Bill discovers one horse killed by the bear, Tom stumbles upon the other badly injured. Loyal to his fallen companion, Bill swears to take revenge on the bear. Soon enough, they come across a cub in the company of a Kodiak who mentors him in hunting and fishing. While traveling together, they encounter a female grizzly and engage in a mating ritual that impresses her. Eager to locate the Kodiak, the two hunters team up with another man and his fierce Beaucerons, along with Tom’s Airedale Terrier. The bears attempt to flee by scaling a cliff as the dogs pursue them. In an effort to protect the cub, the Kodiak bravely defends himself against the pack while the cub hides in a nearby cave.
