He relocates to a hotel where he makes multiple attempts at taking his own life. However, his situation takes a turn when he adopts an alternative persona manifested through a discarded hand puppet shaped like a beaver. Donning the puppet at all times, Walter communicates exclusively as the beaver, aiding in his recovery process. He rebuilds his relationships with his younger son Henry and estranged wife while also reviving the success of his business with the creation of Mr. Beaver Building Kits for children.
Porter, a paid writer for fellow students, is approached by Norah, whose brother recently passed away, to pen her graduation speech. He becomes emotionally invested in Norah and senses that she is suppressing her grief over her brother’s death. However, his father’s behavior with a beaver puppet deeply embarrasses him. In an attempt to encourage Norah to open up about her feelings, Porter impulsively sprays ‘R.I.P. Brian’ on a nearby wall. This only angers Norah and they end up getting arrested. As a result of Walter’s deception about the puppet being part of his therapy under the supervision of his psychiatrist, his wife decides to leave their home with their children. She believes that he suffers from dissociative identity disorder, with the beaver puppet controlling him, making communication impossible between them.
