The Beguiled (2017)
Sofia Coppola’s film The Beguiled (2017) is a Southern Gothic psychological thriller, based on Thomas P. Cullinan’s novel of the same name from 1966. It is the second adaptation of Cullinan’s novel, following Don Siegel’s 1971 film. Set during the Civil War in Virginia, it follows Martha Farnsworth who runs a girls’ school with only five students and one teacher, Edwina Morrow, remaining after almost everyone has left including the slaves. While searching for mushrooms in the woods, pupil Amy finds John McBurney, a wounded Union Army corporal who has deserted. She brings him to the school where Miss Farnsworth tends to his wounds and he falls unconscious. The women then lock him in one of the rooms for safety.
The handsome man instantly captivates all the women and girls at the school. In 1864, John McBurney, a badly wounded Northern corporal, makes his way to the grand manor that now serves as Miss Martha Farnsworth’s Seminary for Young Ladies in war-torn Virginia. Amy, one of the five remaining students, finds him and brings him inside to be cared for. He becomes the sole source of masculine beauty for the six single females living there. Initially locked up for safety and propriety, he eventually recovers enough to interact with some of his secret admirers in intimate and manipulative ways. As emotions run high and conflicts arise, the six conspire maliciously when they feel he has become too unpredictable after a period of celebration.
