The BFG (2016)
The film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s popular novel The BFG (2016), directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, follows the story of Sophie, a ten-year-old girl living in a London orphanage. Sophie suffers from insomnia and often stays up reading through the nights. One night at three in the morning, she sees an elderly giant outside her window during what she calls the ‘witching hour’. The giant captures her and takes her to Giant Country where he explains that she must stay with him for life as she has seen him and must not reveal the existence of giants. He warns her about nine other man-eating giants who live in Giant Country and pose a threat to anyone wandering outside.
During the late hours of the night, young Sophie, an orphan plagued by sleeplessness, catches a glimpse of a towering figure looming outside her peaceful London orphanage. Before she knows it, she is face-to-face with an enormous giant who captures her and brings her to his hidden realm: Giant Country. Fortunately, unlike the other flesh-eating giants in his world, this particular gigantic creature is a kind herbivore on a noble mission. But as time goes on, the other residents with their peculiar names will catch wind of the little human visitor and nothing will be able to stop them. Will the Big Friendly Giant, Sophie’s only companion, be able to protect her from the dangers lurking in their world?
