The Big Chill (1983), an American comedy-drama directed by Lawrence Kasdan, follows a group of University of Michigan alumni and close friends as they gather at the Tidalholm plantation in Beaufort, South Carolina for the funeral of their friend Alex Marshall, who died by suicide. They all stay with Sarah and Harold Cooper during their visit. Along with Alex’s girlfriend Chloe, the group includes Sam Weber, a television actor; Meg Jones, a former public defender now working as a real-estate attorney; Michael Gold, a journalist for People magazine; Nick Carlton, a Vietnam vet struggling with drug addiction; Karen Bowen, an unfulfilled writer married to conservative advertising executive Richard. While out jogging early the next morning, Harold discloses to Nick that a large corporation is planning to buy his small company, making him wealthy and tripling the stock’s value.

He informs Alex of this news, allowing him the opportunity to purchase property in the area. Harold also recommends that Nick use this insider information to pursue a new career path. During their exchange, it is revealed that Sarah and Alex had a brief romance five years prior, which was common knowledge among their group of friends. In an attempt to console Harold, Nick reassures him that Sarah did not end up marrying Alex. Despite moving past it, Sarah confides in Karen that her friendship with Alex was affected by their affair. Richard departs the following day, while Karen remains behind. As for Harold, Nick, Michael, and Chloe, they head out to visit the old house that Chloe and Alex were renovating.
