The Big Short (2015)
The American biographical crime comedy-drama film, The Big Short (2015), was directed and co-written by Adam McKay. It tells the story of the U.S mortgage housing crisis of 2005 through three separate but parallel perspectives. Michael Burry, an eccentric ex-physician now managing a hedge fund called Scion Capital, has a unique approach to business – sporting shorts, bare feet, and a Supercuts haircut. He is convinced that the US housing market is in a bubble that will inevitably burst within the next few years. With autonomy in his company, Burry takes action and bets against the housing market with banks who are eager to accept his proposal – something unheard of in American history. Though they see him as a crackpot, the banks are confident they will win this deal.
Deutschebank’s Jared Vennett catches wind of Burry’s actions and believes he too can benefit from his unconventional beliefs as an investor. After receiving a mistaken call, Mark Baum, an idealist fed up with financial industry corruption, becomes aware of important information. Despite initial distrust, Baum and his colleagues at Morgan Stanley decide to team up with Vennett. Along with Burry’s intel, they also discover that the mortgage ratings by bond agencies are inflated and banks are grouping sub-prime mortgages into high-rated packages. Charlie Geller and Jamie Shipley from a start-up called Brownfield come across Vennett’s prospectus and want to get involved. They reach out to retired banker Ben Rickert for assistance since they lack the necessary clout.
