The Bikeriders (2023)
The Bikeriders (2023), an American period crime drama film written and directed by Jeff Nichols, follows the story of Kathy Bauer as she meets Benny Cross, an impulsive member of the Vandals Motorcycle Club based in Chicago. Despite knowing each other for just five weeks, they get married. Meanwhile, photography student Danny Lyon joins the Vandals on their journey and interviews them along the way. During his time with the club, he comes to learn that founder Johnny Davis was inspired to create it after watching Marlon Brando in The Wild One. However, Johnny faces a challenge to his leadership when he rejects a suggestion from a Vandal to allow new chapters to form. A fight ensues, which Johnny ultimately wins and restores his authority but still allows expansion of the club.
As new chapters begin to form across the Midwest, Benny is viciously attacked by two men in a bar for wearing his colors in 1969. He suffers severe injuries and has to undergo surgery. In retaliation, Johnny forces the bar owner to reveal the attackers’ identities and orders the Vandals to burn down the bar. While Benny is recovering from surgery, Johnny pressures him to attend a motorcycle rally before he has fully healed, much to Kathy’s disapproval. When Johnny steps down, he offers Benny leadership of the club, but Benny turns it down. However, when a 20-year-old delinquent named ‘the Kid’ asks to join the Vandals with his motorcycle club, Johnny initially dismisses them. To test the Kid’s loyalty, Johnny allows him to join alone. But when the Kid shows readiness to abandon his friends, Johnny rejects him.
