The Black Dahlia (2006)
The Black Dahlia (2006), an American neo-noir crime thriller film directed by Brian De Palma and written by Josh Friedman, is based on the 1987 novel of the same name by James Ellroy. The plot is inspired by the widely sensationalized murder of Elizabeth Short. LAPD detectives Dwight ‘Bucky’ Bleichert and Lee Blanchard are partners, paired after engaging in a boxing match to raise public support for the department. During this time, Lee introduces Bucky to his girlfriend Kay Lake, and the three become inseparable friends. However, Bucky is taken aback when Kay reveals she is not romantically involved with Lee and then attempts to seduce him. He rejects her advances. In addition, Bucky discovers that Kay has been branded with the initials ‘BD’, representing Bobby DeWitt, the gangster who was arrested and convicted for a major bank robbery that helped advance Lee’s career. On January 15, 1947, Elizabeth Short’s dismembered body is found and labeled as ‘The Black Dahlia’ by media outlets.
Both detectives are consumed with solving this gruesome case. Bucky discovers that Elizabeth, who had ambitions of becoming an actress, had a role in a film and frequented lesbian hangouts. In one such nightclub, he meets a striking woman named Madeleine Linscott, who bears a strong resemblance to Elizabeth. Madeleine, who comes from a prominent family, confides in Bucky about her close relationship with Elizabeth and offers him sexual favors in return for keeping her involvement out of the media. She wastes no time in introducing him to her affluent parents. Lee’s fixation on the case causes him to act unpredictably and lash out at Kay. Following a heated argument between Lee and Bucky related to a previous case, Bucky goes to apologize to the couple but is informed by Kay that Lee was following up on a lead about Bobby DeWitt.
