The Blackout (1997)
Directed by Abel Ferrara, The Blackout (1997) is an American drama film starring popular actor Matthew Modine. It was featured at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, but not in competition. Matty, tired of the Hollywood lifestyle, relocates to Miami and proposes to his French girlfriend, also named Annie. However, she declines and reveals that she had an abortion. Feeling devastated about losing their baby (despite initially suggesting the abortion), Matty and his friend Micky decide to go on a wild night out. While at a nightclub, they meet another waitress named Annie and Matty ultimately passes out before the night’s end.
A year and a half has passed, and Matty now resides in New York, embracing sobriety through attending AA meetings. He also has a romantic connection with the lovely model Susan. However, his mind is still consumed by memories of his ex-girlfriend Annie and the strange events of his night in Miami. In an attempt to find closure, he returns to Miami to reconnect with old acquaintances and hopefully locate Annie, who disappeared without a trace. Through his journey, Matty discovers that sometimes, it’s better to leave some secrets buried in the past.
