The Blue Umbrella (2013), a Pixar short film paired with Monsters University, brings a city scene to life amidst a rainstorm. Various objects – signs, lights, awnings, mailboxes, buildings, and more – are animated with faces and expressions, delighting in the shower. Amidst the passing people under their black umbrellas is one standout: a lone blue umbrella. While its owner pauses at a street corner, the blue umbrella catches sight of a charming red umbrella nearby. Their exchanged glances reveal an instant attraction, but fate pulls them apart as their owners continue on separate paths. However, the other objects on the street conspire to bring the two together. Just as the blue umbrella is about to be whisked away into a subway station, a helpful sign uses the wind to free it from its owner’s grasp.
As the umbrella floats towards its destination, a sudden gust of wind from a passing bus knocks it off course and sends it tumbling into the street. With danger looming from oncoming traffic, various objects leap into action to protect it: a construction sign lights up to divert a car, a gurgling drain pipe sprays water to push it out of harm’s way, another sign topples over to fling it away from another vehicle, and a drain shoots it into the air. Sadly, its efforts are in vain as the umbrella is ultimately struck by a truck, much to the dismay of its well-intentioned allies. After enduring some injuries and damage, the umbrella is eventually found by its owner who carefully straightens it out. In that moment, the owner of a red umbrella approaches and offers a helping hand, reuniting the two companions.
