The Body (2012)
The Spanish mystery thriller film The Body (2012), co-written and directed by Oriol Paulo, follows Inspector Jaime Peña as he looks into an accident that has left night watchman Ángel Torres in a coma. Security footage reveals Ángel fleeing from his job at the morgue before being struck by a car. Peña is then informed that Mayka Villaverde, a middle-aged and wealthy businesswoman who was married to a younger man, has disappeared from the morgue after suffering a heart attack on a business trip. Her widower, Álex Ulloa, is shocked to hear this news while in the company of his young mistress, Carla Miller. While at the morgue, Álex provides the coroner with details about Mayka’s medical history.
Peña suspects that the body was taken to avoid an autopsy and is doubtful of Álex, who seems to casually refer to his late wife. He mentions that Ruth passed away in a car accident a decade ago, yet he still speaks of her as if she were alive. When Álex hears a loud noise, he investigates and discovers an open locker. Among its contents is a small bottle marked TH–16, which reminds him of earlier when he added a few drops from the same bottle into Mayka’s wine. Peña approaches him and reveals that Mayka’s phone is missing. Upon searching Álex, Peña finds the bottle and learns from him that it contains a toxin manufactured by Mayka’s pharmaceutical company. However, Álex claims he discovered it on the floor and has no knowledge of its effects.
