When Italian fishermen rescue a man with two gunshot wounds in the Mediterranean Sea, they discover that he has no memory of his identity but possesses advanced combat skills and fluency in multiple languages. Upon finding a laser projector embedded under his skin, displaying a safe deposit box number in Zürich, the man embarks on an investigation. At the bank, he discovers various currencies, passports, and IDs under different names, along with a handgun. Choosing to use the American passport under the name Jason Bourne, he leaves behind the gun. Later, an employee from the bank contacts Operation Treadstone – a CIA black ops program – after Bourne’s departure.
Treadstone’s leader, Alexander Conklin, sends out alerts to law enforcement to capture Bourne and assigns three operatives, codenamed Castel, Manheim, and the Professor, to eliminate him. After a failed assassination attempt on exiled African ruler Wombosi, CIA Deputy Director Ward Abbott reaches out to Conklin. He assures Abbott that he will take care of whoever was responsible for the botched mission. In an effort to evade Swiss authorities, Bourne uses his U.S. passport at the American consulate but becomes the target of Marine guards. He manages to escape and offers $20,000 to Marie Kreutz, a 26-year-old German woman he had seen at the consulate, to drive him to an address in Paris. Once they arrive at their destination, they enter an apartment where Bourne contacts a hotel over the phone.
