The Bourne Identity (1988), based on Robert Ludlum’s 1980 novel of the same name, is an American miniseries. It was written by Carol Sobieski and directed by Roger Young for Warner Bros. Television. The lead role of Jason Bourne was played by Richard Chamberlain, while Jaclyn Smith also starred. The series closely follows the plot of the book and has a duration of 185 minutes. With commercials included, it ran for a total of four hours and first premiered on ABC split into two 120-minute segments over two nights. Due to this format, it was considered a miniseries rather than a TV movie and received a nomination for Outstanding Miniseries at the 40th Primetime Emmy Awards.
During a storm, a man is found unconscious on the shore of a small French village. A retired doctor offers to tend to him. When the mysterious stranger regains consciousness, he has no recollection of his past. He cannot recall his name, the source of his flashbacks, or why he has an access code for a secret Swiss bank account embedded in his thigh. As he tries to piece together his identity, things take a dangerous turn. Someone tries to kill him and it turns out he is known in luxurious hotels across Europe. To make matters worse, there are disturbing similarities between his memories and the reported actions of notorious terrorist Carlos the Jackal.
