The Bourne Supremacy (2004) is an action-thriller film featuring Robert Ludlum’s popular character, Jason Bourne. While the title is derived from the second novel in the series (1986), the film’s plot is completely unique. We find Bourne and his partner Marie Kreutz living peacefully in Goa, India where he continues to struggle with memory loss. To piece together his past as a CIA assassin, Bourne records flashbacks in a notebook. Across the globe in Berlin, CIA agent Pamela Landy authorizes $3 million to be paid to a Russian source for important documents known as the Neski files, detailing the theft of $20 million seven years earlier. However, their transaction is unexpectedly interrupted by Kirill, an agent of the Russian Federal Security Service working for oligarch Yuri Gretkov. In a violent turn of events, Kirill kills both the source and agent and takes off with the money and files while framing Bourne for the attack through planted fingerprints.
With her suspicions raised, Landy turns to Section Chief Ward Abbott for answers on Operation Treadstone – the now defunct CIA program Bourne was involved with. Several years ago, Russian politician Vladimir Neski was on the verge of exposing a thief when he was tragically killed by his wife in a suspected murder-suicide in Berlin. Landy strongly believes that Bourne and Alexander Conklin, Treadstone’s former supervisor, were involved and that Bourne was responsible for the death of the Neskis. Gretkov then orders Kirill to eliminate Bourne in Goa. Despite fleeing with Marie, Bourne is eventually pursued and Marie is killed by Kirill, who is unaware that they had switched seats during their escape. Eventually leaving Goa, Bourne makes his way to Naples where he deliberately allows himself to be recognized by security personnel.
