The Brave (1997)
The film adaptation of the Gregory McDonald novel, The Brave (1997), marked Depp’s directorial debut. He co-wrote the screenplay with his brother and the film was first shown at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, where it garnered generally negative reviews. The story follows Raphael, a Native American man living in a remote community near a garbage dump. In order to support his family, he resorts to selling whatever he can. Desperate for a better life for his loved ones, Raphael agrees to star in a snuff film for a large sum of money. However, he is given an advance payment and one week to live before being tortured and killed on camera. As his final days approach, Raphael grapples with his fate and reevaluates his relationships with his wife and children.
