The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

The film adaptation of The Bridges of Madison County (1995) follows the story of the 1992 best-selling novel written by Robert James Waller. In the present time, Michael and Carolyn Johnson, adult siblings, travel to their mother’s farmhouse in Iowa after her passing to handle her affairs. To their surprise, Francesca had requested to be cremated and have her ashes scattered from Roseman Covered Bridge instead of being buried next to her late husband, Richard. Despite Michael’s initial refusal, a discovery is made while going through Francesca’s safe deposit box. Inside is an envelope containing photographs, letters from a man named Robert Kincaid and a key. The photos depict Francesca at Holliwell Covered Bridge and the letters reveal her connection with Robert Kincaid. The key unlocks Francesca’s locked hope chest.
The box contains three hardcover notebooks and various National Geographic magazines. One of the magazines showcases Madison County’s covered wooden bridges, along with old cameras, a book, and other keepsakes. In a photo within that magazine, Kincaid, who photographed the bridges, is seen wearing Francesca’s crucifix pendant. As Michael and Carolyn delve into Francesca’s journals, the story takes us back to 1965. Francesca, a WWII war bride from Bari, Italy, remains at home while her husband and teenage children visit the state fair for the next four days. During this time, Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer on a mission to capture images of the county’s historic bridges, arrives at the Johnson farm asking for directions to Roseman Bridge.
