The Brothers Bloom (2008)
The American caper comedy-drama film, The Brothers Bloom (2008), written and directed by Rian Johnson, set in America. Orphaned as children, the brothers spent their youth moving between foster homes. When they were thirteen, Stephen came up with an elaborate plan to help Bloom overcome his shyness and talk to a girl; it also happened to be their first con job. As adults, the brothers are successful con men and are joined by their accomplice and explosives expert, Bang Bang, for a celebration in Berlin after completing a job. However, Bloom begins to yearn for a life beyond Stephen’s schemes and eventually goes his own way. Months later, Stephen tracks down Bloom in Montenegro and convinces him to participate in one last con: targeting Penelope Stamp, a wealthy heiress living alone in her New Jersey mansion.
Bloom makes an unexpected entrance into Penelope’s solitary existence when he crashes into her luxury sports car on his bicycle. As they get to know each other, they discover that Penelope has a variety of unusual interests, such as playing multiple musical instruments, juggling chainsaws, and pursuing pinhole photography. Seeing an opportunity to use Penelope’s desire for excitement and companionship to his advantage, Bloom pretends to be a traveling antiques dealer heading to Europe. And so it is that Penelope eagerly sets off with the brothers and Bang Bang on their journey to Greece. However, things take a suspicious turn when Melville, a shady black market dealer hired by Stephen, reveals that the brothers are actually involved in smuggling activities. He also presents them with a tempting offer: for a hefty sum of $1 million, he will obtain a rare book from Prague that they can sell for $2.5 million.
