The Brothers Grimm (2005)
The Brothers Grimm (2005) is a fantasy adventure film directed by Terry Gilliam. The two main characters, Will and Jake Grimm, are skilled con artists who use Jake’s extensive knowledge of folklore to swindle unsuspecting individuals. Along with their companions Hidlick and Bunst, they roam through French-occupied Germany in the early 19th century. In the town of Karlstadt, they successfully deceive the villagers by pretending to ‘defeat’ a witch’s ghost. However, their luck runs out when they are captured by Italian torturer Cavaldi and brought before the French General Delatombe. Delatombe believes that the disappearance of young girls in the small village of Marbaden is the work of supernatural beings and enlists The Brothers’ help in solving the mystery. He suspects that it may be the handiwork of fellow con artists like Will and Jake themselves.
They quickly uncover a true otherworldly power: a bewitching, yet perilous, 500-year-old Thuringian Queen who abducts young girls to restore her own attractiveness. Centuries ago, King Childeric I arrived in the forest to construct a city while his Queen dabbled in dark magic in pursuit of everlasting life. When the Bubonic plague descended upon them, she constructed a towering stronghold to evade it but tragically watched her husband and subjects perish below. Unaware that the Plague was borne by the wind, she slowly withered away throughout the years. Her enchantment granted her an endless existence, but not the eternal youth and beauty she desired. Her youthful countenance now only remains within her mirror, the wellspring of her vitality, as an illusion with no substance.
