The 'Burbs (1989)
The American black comedy film, The ‘Burbs (1989), was directed by Joe Dante. During a week-long vacation, suburban homeowner Ray Peterson overhears strange noises coming from the basement of his secluded new neighbors, the Klopeks. Along with Art Weingartner and Vietnam War veteran Mark Rumsfield, Ray becomes suspicious that the Klopeks may be ritualistic murderers. One night, they witness the youngest Klopek carrying an unusually large garbage bag to their trash can and forcefully crushing it down. Despite a rainy night, Ray spots the Klopeks digging in their backyard. The following day, Ray, Mark, and Art search through the garbage truck for any evidence of human remains after the Klopeks’ trash is collected, but come up empty-handed.
Bonnie, Mark’s wife, discovers Walter’s dog roaming free and becomes concerned for the elderly man. Together with Ray, Art, the Rumsfields, and their teenage neighbor Ricky Butler, they enter Walter’s house and find it in disarray – with overturned chairs and his toupée left behind. Despite their efforts, they are unable to locate Walter. Not wanting to leave the dog unattended, Ray takes it back home and leaves a note for Walter before slipping his toupée through the mail slot. From a distance, Ray notices one of the Klopeks watching him from their house. This only adds fuel to Art and Ray’s theory that the Klopeks may have used Walter as a human sacrifice – especially when Ray’s dog digs up a human femur near their fence line. Growing tired of the men’s wild speculations and unruly behavior, Carol takes charge and arranges a friendly visit to the Klopeks’ home.
